How to get a DEA license

If your job will require a DEA license you will need to register for one. Start by following the on-line registration at https://apps.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/webforms/. Note that registration fees are non-refundable.

Being issued a DEA license is based on successfully completing all the requirements imposed by the state in which the practitioner will conduct business and obtain a state license. If the practitioner fails to obtain a license or has a revoked, or rescinded license, then the DEA will not issue the requested registration. If an existing DEA registrant loses his/her state privileges, then the DEA will revoke them too. Registration of a DEA license is done every three years. Separate registrations are required for each place of business or practice. If the practitioners location changes then an update to your DEA registration must be made to assure no lapse in privileges. New applications take 4-6 weeks to process. Renewals take approximately 4 weeks. Renewal notification will be sent out approximately 65 days prior to expiration. The notice will be sent to the “mail to” address associated with your DEA registration. It is the only notice you will receive.

During the process you can call 800.882.9539 for updates on the status of your application or the nearest DEA Field Office near you. If you need to overnight something to the DEA you can do so at:

Drug Enforcement Administration
ATTN: Registration Unit, DRR
8701 Morrissette Drive
Springfield, VA 22152

The DEA will not incur the cost of any delivery service and all packages will be scanned for security purposes. Scanning done off-site will add a day to the delivery time.

If you are applying for an Individual Registration the following will be required:

  1. Full Name
  2. Address
  3. Social Security Number
  4. Phone Number
  5. State License

If you are applying for a Business Registration the following will be required:

  1. Name of Business
  2. Address
  3. Tax ID
  4. Phone Number
  5. State License

Background information will be required and payment at time of registration.
